Q+A with Thomas McDonnell, one of our Health and Fitness team

In the spotlight this month is Thomas McDonnell, Health and Fitness Advisor.

What are your three tips to help us all keep health and fitness at the top of our list?

  • Stick to exercises you enjoy
  • Have structure to your programme
  • Seek advice from one of the team if you are unsure of what to do in the gym

What is your regular fitness routine?
I do weight training four days a week at the moment. Focusing on German Volume Training - 10x10, so 10 sets with 10 reps. I also box twice a week and play football twice a week. 

What are your proudest achievements, fitness or otherwise?
Being able to be an established trainer and Level 3 qualified by the age of 20. 
 
What is your favourite quote?
The pain you feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow.  
 
Share one of your personal top secrets for keeping fit and healthy in mind body and spirit?
Have fun when you’re training, listen to your body, and rest!

How would you describe your teaching style and how do you help your members reach their goals?
My teaching style is very energetic. I make sure I get the best out of everyone no matter what fitness level they are - I adapt the exercise to suit your level. 

What health and fitness app do you use to help?
I don’t use any apps! I'm very old school in my approach to training, by manually recording data and diet. 

What do you love about your job?
What I love about my job is the people I work with. Hearing stories from older clients and members really intrigues me. I always have a great time at work - I come in with a smile and leave with a smile. 

What has your job taught you about yourself?
My job has taught me how to get the best out of everyone and how to work with all members of our community.

If you had a another life, in another world, what would their dream job be?
I would like to run my own pub because I love social environments. 

What does a good day look like?
Helping as many people as possible with their goals within the day, and having a banging workout to top it off! 

What is important to you?
Being positive, having a laugh and smiling.
