Steve Whitmore is one of Central YMCAs longest-standing volunteers. For more than 25 years Steve has provided 2,500 hours of his time, supporting and motivating programmes for our local community and members. A proud moment for all of us at Central YMCA, Steve has been awarded the Outstanding Community Achievement at the Sporta AGM 10th Anniversary Awards.
Sporta is the national association of leisure and cultural trusts. Members operate in a wide range of services in communities across the UK - from the Shetland Isles, Cornwall, and the Western Highlands to Kent.
Steve said of the award: “My category was the last one announced - I was up against some very worthy candidates. It was a complete shock. I was so pleased that Positive Health were acknowledged too.”
Positive Health is an exercise referral programme. It offers advice and structured activities to those living with HIV and AIDS. Steve’s role as a volunteer required mentoring the referrals of those who were in need of extra support and guidance due to certain medical conditions. Steve’s motivation and encouragement were key indicators when it came to improving both mental and physical wellbeing.
A role model to other YMCA Positive Health volunteers, Steve regularly shares his knowledge. Well done on yet another win Steve!
