MYZONE® belts can be purchased for £49.99 at the Club Reception.
What is MYZONE®?
MYZONE® is a chest strap and monitoring system that transmits heart rate, calories and effort in real time to a live display and wirelessly uploads that data to a logbook that can be accessed online or through an app. Every user receives their own cloud based account acting as an online log book, where all physical activity is automatically uploaded.
You may have noticed the Health and Fitness team using MYZONE® belts around the Club to monitor our effort, particularly while we teach classes. You could say they’re a favourite of ours! With a MYZONE® belt, you too can keep track of your own activity and match our effort on the MYZONE® televisions, situated in the Main Sports Hall, the Cycle Studio and the cardio zones on levels -2 and -3.
What are MYZONE® Effort Points (MEPs)?
MEPs are MYZONE®s metric for measuring physical activity. They accumulate for every minute of activity that a user spends in the five effort (intensity) zones based on the user’s maximum heart rate. The more effort that is put in, the more MYZONE effort points are earned.
As well as MEPs, MYZONE calculates calories burned, duration and time of activity and with the help of bio impedance scales can monitor and track values such as weight, muscle mass, body water percentage, metabolic age, body fat percentage and much more.
With MYZONE®, you can record your progress and keep up with your instructor!
Don’t just take our word for it:
“An excellent tool to use to track your activity levels. It also provides information on your exertion and calorie burn so is a great way to monitor your progress and hit your targets.”
Alison Gower, YMCA Personal Trainer and Cycle Instructor
“My zone is such a great asset to ease training beyond a plateau. Until I tried the belt, I hadn't realised my training had reached a plateau, and I was stuck in my comfort zone. I had been convinced I was still training hard when a little bit of sweat appeared, and my breathing began to increase - putting the MYZONE® belt on made me realise that I was far closer to the middle of the moderate zone than I thought.
I have found it particularly useful to track the minute by minute intensity of different activities; it picks up the energy you expend in your sprints and hill climbs in your cycle class, it'll tell you which parts of a circuit class use most of your energy (and for all of us this will be different), shows how a ViPR class is surprisingly intense, you'll be able to pick up the blocks of intervals in Cardio Kick, and it'll show you how wonderful an intense kettlebell class is to expend energy (whilst at the same time building muscle).
It's also great for training for running events; you can use it to measure different tempos, and for the longer runs, you could use it to monitor your improved fitness - staying in the same zones, you should be able to cover the same distance at the same intensity in progressively less time - and then you can take the plunge and ask the gym team to reset it; do this anytime you are feeling you want to challenge your training."
Nick Owen, YMCA Club Nutritionist
“I have been a MYZONE® belt owner since its inception at YMCA in March 2012. The system enables you to measure your activity and effort. It will measure the amount of calories you burn off; the number of MEPS you use; the duration and intensity of your effort and how much individual activities contribute to your overall work-out. It will give you daily, weekly, monthly and annual read-outs in statistical and bar chart formats. The system will enable you to measure these activities individually or in conjunction with your trainer if you have one, enabling them to design new programme activities as part of your development and wellbeing. All in all a very good system.”
“MYZONE allows me to monitor how hard I am working during a workout, which is a great way to help keep me motivated as you want to get the best score possible. I can also see how many calories I have burnt during a workout which is accurate to me; the calories you burn during a class would be different for each person. The app helps me keep track of all of this information so that I can monitor my progress.”
