This month’s member Q&A features Linda Al-Kanai, a retired nurse who has been a member with us since 2010. She loves being active and has dabbled in a wide range of exercise including but not limited to jazz dance, yoga, running, shotokan karate, step, aqua aerobics, spinning. Read on to find out more.
What, if any, exercise/fitness did you do before you joined YMCA Club?
I have led a very active life and have tried a lot of different forms of exercise before. This includes; Jazz Dance, Yoga, Running, Shotokan Karate, Step and Aqua aerobics and Spinning .
What motivated you to join YMCA Club?
My son was once a member of this gym and this prompted me to join.
What’s your favourite class/activity at the gym?
I love all the classes and with some many to choose from I never get bored but if I had to pick my favourite classes then I would choose indoor cycling and circuits.
What is your regular weekly fitness routine?
I usually come to the gym 5 or 6 days week and like to participate in indoor cycling, circuits, Vipr classes and use the rower, treadmill and free weights.
How has being a member at YMCA Club helped with your fitness targets/goals?
Having put weight on when I was working full time I decided it was time to lose it and I lost 20kg over 2 years. I have never felt better than I do now.
What current/future fitness targets/goals do you have?
To maintain my present fitness level and hope to carry it through into my seventies!
How does improved fitness help you in everyday life?
It is a great mechanism to help the older person, people who are aging should never under-estimate their abilities. Exercising regularly keeps me healthy and strong which helps when performing everyday tasks.
Do you think exercise has an impact on you mentally e.g. confidence, alertness, stress, depression?
I do, I find that exercise keeps me alert and is superb for counteracting everyday stresses.
Do you have any friendships from the Club?
Everyone at the club is so friendly and it has been easy to make and build friendships with other members and the staff.
What keeps you motivated to workout at the Club?
I feel completely invigorated after my workouts and this feeling keeps me coming back for more time and time again.
How would you describe YMCA Club to a friend?
I would say that the YMCA Club is like one large family.
What in your opinion differentiate YMCA Club from other gyms?
YMCA has friendly, expert staff and brilliant facilities.
What is your proudest fitness achievement?
Building my fitness level enough to participate in advanced circuits which I am fairly sure helped the weight loss.
What is your proudest other achievement?
Completing in MA in Medical Law at the age of 58.
Is there anything you want to add or feel you want to convey?
It makes my day to turn up to the gym and enjoy my workout with other like-minded people.
What is important to you?
The most important things to me are my family and my friends.
