YMCA UK Based Charity

The Central YMCA Club is one important department of Central YMCA, a large registered charity, established in 1844 and in fact the world's founding YMCA. We are a charity with surprising and hidden depths and from our base here in central London we currently work at local, national and international levels to improve standards in health and fitness provision, participation and education.

Vision
Central YMCA aspires to be the Activity for Health charity. We want to see a world where all individuals have the opportunity to live healthy lives in mind, body and spirit.

Mission
We seek change in health attitudes and behaviour through advocacy, education, the provision of services and direct delivery.

Values
We are values-based and values-driven. We believe in:

Wholeness
We believe that health and happiness are inextricably linked and that, through developing creativity and improved physical wellbeing, we can work towards wholeness of mind, body and spirit.

Community
We believe in inspiring individuals to care about their communities; to make a difference, not just to their own lives, but to the lives of those around them.

Equality
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to reach their potential and recognise that people are different and sometimes we need to treat them differently in order to give them an equal chance.

Excellence
We want people to be the best they can be. To do that, we strive to be the best in all that we do. We aim to drive the agenda and be the leaders in our field.

Creativity
We believe in finding new ways to tackle existing issues. We believe in encouraging creativity and innovation in our own work and in the individuals we work with, enabling them to find solutions to fit their unique needs.

About the YMCA in England

In England, each individual YMCA is an independent charity, focussing its energies and skills within its own communities and providing many examples of superb work. YMCAs work in lots of different ways and each one you visit will probably be very different from any other. With regard to a national structure, autonomous YMCA associations affiliate to what is called the National Council of YMCAs - also known as YMCA England. Currently, there are some 140 independent YMCAs affiliated to the National Council of YMCAs. If viewed as one, ‘the YMCA’ is usually most readily associated with social housing for young people, youth training programmes, fitness qualifications and exercise facilities. For information on YMCAs in England visit www.ymca.org.uk.
